1923年到1929年間，是巴斯特·基頓電影生涯中最輝煌的6年，這6年中，他拍攝了12部長片，每一部都非常成功，他以獨特的外型和喜劇表演方式，與查理·卓別林齊名（事實上，由于卓別林在20年代出片頻率大大降低，當(dāng)時最出風(fēng)頭的喜劇演員是基頓和Harold Lloyd）。其中有名作《我們的待客之道》（1923），The Navigator（1924），《Sherlock Jr.》（1924），《將軍號》（1926），《Steamboat Bill, Jr.》（1928）和《Cameraman》（1928）。
在《The Navigator》中由于基頓的影片《將軍號》和《College》票房不盡人意，從1928年起，Joseph Schenck選擇放棄獨立制片，全職擔(dān)任聯(lián)藝公司的主席，并提議基頓加盟米高梅公司。因為Shenck的兄弟在米高梅作主席，基頓接受了這個讓他后悔終身的決定。
在加盟米高梅后，基頓雖然在同年拍出了《Cameraman》這樣的經(jīng)典影片，但是由于喪失了對自己影片的控制，沒有了支持他的技術(shù)班底，基頓的影片開始進入米高梅的套路中。
作為米高梅的第一位動作喜劇明星，片場其實完全不知道如何利用。尤其是進入有聲電影以后，由于片場對制片過程的嚴(yán)格控制，基頓無法像以前一樣沒有劇本，大膽即興，而要按照片場的要求使用寫好的劇本，在片場拍攝，嚴(yán)格控制預(yù)算和拍攝日程，使用特技替身，讓基頓不能在影片中像以前那樣設(shè)計動作喜劇，影片的活力和節(jié)奏也大打折扣（基頓酗酒的毛病加重了這一點），逐漸淪為一般的喜劇。
這一特點在片場讓基頓和著名笑匠Jimmy Durrant搭檔后尤為明顯。（事實上片場體系成熟后，傳統(tǒng)的棍棒喜劇幾乎消失，著名的例外有后來基頓的搭檔Eddie Clines在Universal和W.C.Fields合作的系列影片，雖然按照傳統(tǒng)的喜劇方式全即興拍攝，但因為能奇跡般的控制成本，破例獲得巨大成功。）
1931年，基頓到歐洲旅游，這次旅行對他影響很大。
1932年，基頓與妻子離婚，他買了一輛巨大的旅行汽車，此后1年間就生活在這輛汽車?yán)?，酗酒的惡?xí)逐漸加深，讓基頓的身體條件逐漸下降。1933年，在屢次進行戒酒治療沒有效果后，米高梅和基頓解約。而其它公司也因為酗酒問題不愿跟基頓簽約，基頓的明星生涯宣告結(jié)束。
